Claudio Schmidt VELERIA DECORAZIONI

Shadowlands

One of the most interesting trends in modern Costa Smeralda architecture is the “invention” of the sun shade. The impetuous winds and blinding glare of the Sardinia summer are responsible for that, of course. The big newly built villas and the historic Pevero and Romazzino Hotels hoist them like sails with a sense of uncompromising practicality. Light, white or barely coloured, modern and Mediterranean, spread over equally flimsy structures, they float. No sooner are they designed but they become an essential part of any house’s profile. No sooner are they fitted than they become an essential part of everyday life.
Perhaps if this wasn’t a stretch of coast that hosts so many big regattas during which we are treated to the very latest in maxi yacht spinnaker fashion, we might never have had a sail maker capable of putting his formidable experience to work for our sake. Designing, making and installing these small designer works of art is child’s play to Claudio Schmidt who is more used to working on Porto Cervo’s superyachts. But now he and his family have found this other outlet for their creative talents. They play with light and shade or wind and fabric, it’s all the same to them. Their sun shades have stitching, cut-out motifs and shapes that colour or let through a certain amount of light casting deliciously cool pattern on pavements and walls. No self-respecting Costa villa could be without one. Nor would it want to be!
