Salvatore Todaro commands the submarine Cappellini. During the Second World War, in 1940, while scouring the Atlantic in search of the enemy, he came across the Kabalo, a Belgian armed merchantman. Belgium is a neutral nation but the boat sails with its lights off and carries English planes. A battle breaks out in which Todaro loses a brave man and sinks the merchant ship without mercy. However, it is not the sinking that makes him a hero consigned to eternal memory. Rather, it is the rescue of the 26 castaways, carried out by sailing on the surface for 4 days and 4 nights, putting his life and that of his men at risk. The captain of the Kabalo, taking leave of him, asks him why he exposed himself to such a risk for them who would never have done it in his place. Todaro replies: "we are Italians".
