AUTUNNO IN BARBAGIA 2026 - SORGONO
In the geographical center of Sardinia, one of the most suggestive and significant alignments of menhirs in the Mediterranean has been discovered: in this ancient and magical territory is the town of Sorgono.
The approximately 200 menhirs in the Biru'e Concas area have been dated between the final Neolithic (3200-2800 BC) and the Eneolithic (2800-1800 BC), thus testifying to the first human presence in the area. Also dating back to the prehistoric era are the typical burials dug into the rock called domus de janas, as well as the numerous nuraghes and tombs of giants, protagonists of the civilization of the ancient Sardinians.
More than half of the territory is covered by forests formed by cork oaks, downy oaks, holm oaks, wild olive trees; there are also hazelnut and chestnut trees, wild pear trees, blackthorn trees and the typical essences of the Mediterranean scrub (broom, heather, strawberry tree).
There is no shortage of centuries-old specimens: a few kilometers from the town center, on a hill stand the beautiful monumental trees that surround the important 16th-century country church of San Mauro.
In the center of the town, the delightful multi-story stone houses, typical of local architecture, are preserved in the intricate streets that join the main street where ancient noble palaces in Aragonese Gothic and Art Nouveau style are still visible, witnesses to the ancient role of Sorgono as the capital of Mandrolisai. Elements of late Gothic architecture can be found in the bell tower of the parish church dedicated to the Virgin of the Assumption.
We look forward to seeing you on Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th October in Sorgono.
