AUTUNNO IN BARBAGIA 2026 - LULA
The enormous riches of the Lula territory have attracted ancient civilizations since prehistoric times, of which numerous testimonies are preserved. Its lush forests have led to the hypothesis that the Sardinian toponym Lùvula/Lùgula derives from the term of Etruscan origin "lucus" or "sacred forest".
The extraordinary domus de janas, tombs locally called "concheddas", date back to the Neolithic, some of which were dug into the rock near the "Sos Enattos" mine, probably already used by the Proto-Sardinians. The splendid caves in Mont'Albo date back to the same period, adapted for religious and funerary uses, such as that of "Sos Omines agrestes", while in the Nuragic era inaccessible towers were built on rugged reliefs, giants' tombs and enchanting villages.
The entire relief is characterized by extraordinary gorges and caves which make it the ideal place for sport climbing and speleology enthusiasts. The erosion of the limestone rock caused by the rains has created spectacular karst phenomena such as the graceful plateaus, where you can come across some ancient sheepfolds such as su coile in the "Sa de Mussinu" clearing. The water absorbed in depth gives rise to underground courses that flow into some of the spectacular caves including the impressive vertical chasms of "Tumba de Nurai" and "Sos Nidos".
In the center of the town there is the patronal and parish church of Santa Maria Assunta, located in a square raised above the street level, built between the 12th and 13th centuries, it was frescoed by the Tuscan painter Spirito Lari in the 1920s, restored in the the eighties.
Just 2 km south of the town you come across the famous country sanctuary called "Santu Frantziscu de Lùvula", named after Saint Francis of Assisi, about whom Nobel Prize winner Grazia Deledda wrote. The church was built between the end of the sixteenth century and 1604 in Baroque style and, according to tradition, it was built by a bandit from Nuoro for the grace he received. The festival, which is celebrated every year in May and October, attracts numerous pilgrims especially from the municipality of Nuoro who travel about 30 km on foot during the night to arrive at the sanctuary in the morning. Here the characteristic soup dish is offered with "Su Filindeu", a special pasta produced for the occasion made up of very thin threads arranged in layers and dried before being cooked in sheep and cheese broth.
We look forward to seeing you on Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th October in Lula.
