AUTUNNO IN BARBAGIA 2025 - ORTUERI
Ortueri is a small town located in the Barbagia del Mandrolisai.
The town extends close to the Sa Serra hill and its historic center retains the signs of the old peasant homes, which are perched and placed side by side. The area, rich in springs, has a typically hilly profile and includes numerous vineyards and cork and holm oak forests. The name of Ortueri is in fact often linked to cork artefacts, prestigious both for their originality and for the skill of the craftsmen. Of particular naturalistic interest is the Mui Muscas park, the natural habitat of the Sardinian donkey which can be spotted in complete freedom.
Created in 1994 for the protection of the species, the park extends over approximately fifty-five hectares of municipal territory and is characterized by the presence of Mediterranean scrub and oak and cork forests. Within the park area there are around 50 specimens of the Sardinian donkey which we are trying to safeguard from the now imminent extinction.
Like most of the areas in central Sardinia, with a purely agro-pastoral vocation, Ortueri is no exception: daily life is in fact marked by the rhythms of the agricultural year. From these rules linked to the land and its production cycles, festivals are also born, experienced as a moment of aggregation between people and as a moment of prayer, with the elaboration of propitiatory rites for the success of crops or to calm epidemics and famines.
Among the religious architecture, the parish church of San Nicola stands out, located in the middle area of the town and dating back to the period between the 18th and 19th centuries. The grandiose adjacent bell tower does not escape admiring glances, 38 meters high and second in Sardinia only to the bell tower of Mores. The building is dedicated to the patron saint who is celebrated on the third Sunday of May and to whom the entire population is devoted who, during the event, prepares and offers visitors the typical votive bread called "S'Angule".
Also worth remembering are the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows, which falls on the third Sunday of September and the feast of Santa Maria which is held on the 8th of September, with a mass proclaimed in the country church of the same name.
We look forward to seeing you on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th December in Ortueri.
