AUTUNNO IN BARBAGIA 2025 - FONNI
In the heart of the territory populated by the ancient civilizations of Barbagia lies the hospitable town of Fonni.
The customs and beliefs of the first communities that inhabited the area are demonstrated by the numerous menhirs (in Sardinian perdas fittas) and domus de janas, tombs dug into the rock, dating back to the end of the 4th - beginning of the 3rd millennium BC.
Exciting scenarios in a still uncontaminated and wild area from which you can undertake suggestive excursions to discover canyons and breathtaking views such as the one enjoyed from the tip of Bruncu Spina, 1829 m high.
This is the homeland of the Fonnese shepherd, an endemic dog breed in great demand for the defense of both properties and flocks.
Along the streets of the town, in the oldest districts, there are characteristic mountain houses with one or more floors, built in local stone, and in some cases it is still possible to see the scandulas, archaic wooden tiles. An example of a typical home is given by the nineteenth-century building that houses the Museum of Pastoral Culture of Fonni in which some original furnishings can still be admired.
Among the intricate streets of the historic center there are beautiful murals illustrating scenes of daily life, present or past, and representations of the traditions most deeply felt by the inhabitants.
In one of the original neighborhoods there is the church of the patron saint San Giovanni Battista, rebuilt in the 16th century and which preserves Gothic style architectural elements inside. On the occasion of the feast of the Saint, on 24 June, the ritual bread called su cocone de frores is still prepared according to ancient customs and carried in procession by knights in traditional dress.
The sanctuary built in the 18th century within the evocative complex which, in addition to the basilica, includes the convent of San Francesco and the oratory of San Michele is named after the Virgin of the Martyrs. All the structures overlook the large square enclosed by the cumbessias, once intended to welcome pilgrims.

We look forward to seeing you on December 6th, 7th and 8th. in Fonni: download the complete programme.
