AUTUMN IN BARBAGIA 2024 - OROTELLI
In the heart of Sardinia, where life is still marked by ancient traditions and popular customs, lies the center of Orotelli.
The municipality stands on a plateau characterized by granite rocks of modest dimensions, in particular tonalites present above all in the Serra d'Orotelli, north of the town centre. The town develops into two separate nuclei: the older one, with the historic center arranged around the church dedicated to San Giovanni Battista and the nearby Church of San Lussorio, and starting from the 1930s, the new district of Mussinzua, where the Rural Church of the Santissimo Salvatore and the Parish Church of Spirito Santo, co-patron saint of Orotelli, built starting from 1970 in a modern style on the ruins of the old Aragonese church from the 14th century.
Despite the granite territory, the town has stood out more for its agricultural economy than for the traditional pastoral activity of the island.
In the 1960s, with the crisis in the cereal sector, the community of farmers almost definitively disappeared. The artisan activity remains which, thanks to their art and mastery, has led the Orotellese shoemakers to be known throughout the province. The town has always been considered the homeland of the classic Barbagia boots, sos cambales, still made by hand according to tradition and using wooden lasts, goat bone for the finishing and lining, twine awls and trimmers for the cuts of the leather.
We look forward to seeing you on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th October in Orotelli
