AUTUNNO IN BARBAGIA 2024 - GADONI
The history of Gadoni tells of a land of passage and meeting of ancient peoples who exploited the mineral resources of Funtana Raminosa: here the Nuragic people smelted copper to create the ancient sculptures symbolizing the Bronze Age in Sardinia. To extract the precious metal, the Phoenicians, Carthaginians and Romans dug several tunnels which were then reused in the 20th century.
At the beginning of the 20th century, with the concession of the Funtana Raminosa mine to an Italian-French company, industrial production was undertaken with promising economic prospects. Even today the mining village represents a great wealth for the country: the site is part of the Geo-mining, Historical and Environmental Park of Sardinia recognized by UNESCO.
Nestled between the mountains of Sa Scova and Arzanadolu and crossed by the fascinating cliffs of the Flumendosa river valley, the territory of Gadoni offers a unique nature with wild charm.
Among uncontaminated paths and breathtaking landscapes you will discover almost magical corners such as the delicate S'Istiddiosa waterfall formed by the small Bauzzoni stream: numerous droplets, falling from the rocks, form a myriad of threads of water that descend from the moss-covered walls.
The oldest district of the town develops in a semicircle on the hill where Gadoni stands, bordered by the cliffs that lead to the valley. The pretty houses of the historic center overlook the narrow streets covered with red and black stones from the surrounding mountains on which the characteristic stairways and walls intersect. In the area occupied by the old town hall, the first church dedicated to St. Peter the Apostle was built in the 15th century and destroyed in 1870.
The second Church is that of Santa Marta, consecrated in 1512. Built in late Gothic style, it had to undergo several restoration interventions which modified the original structure. Made entirely of stone, it has an elegant façade on which the red brick frame which also encloses the door and the rose window stands out.
The parish church dedicated to the Assumption was built in 1560, enlarged and modified in the 19th century and preserving, behind the altar, a beautiful 17th-century polyptych. The façade is embellished with a pointed arch portal surmounted by a rose window. At the back there is the graceful bell tower covered by a golden dome.
We look forward to seeing you on Saturday 30 November and Sunday 1st December in Gadoni.
