Itinerary in Paradise

Itinerary in Paradise
Almost every boat excursion in the area includes a visit to the largest beach in the archipelago, Cala Santa Maria, where a gorgeous sandy seabed and crystal clear waters make this beach too crowded during the summer season, except in the early hours of the morning and from the late afternoon onwards. From the beach some villas built in the Sixties are partially visible, what you cannot see, however, are several other buildings of historical and scenic interest: Punta Filetto lighthouse, the small Chapel of the Assumption and the remains of the Benedictine monastery from 1200. These two short trips (there and back in less than an hour) will allow you to take a break from the beach and immerse yourself in the silence and scents of the vegetation. On the northern edge of the beach, beyond the dock, are two dirt roads. One leads inland to the remains of the monastery, now in ruins, and the small church of the Assumption (mass is held once a year only, on the Ferragosto feast day) located at the top of the island with a 360° panorama of the surrounding waters. The road that heads towards the west coast leads to the lighthouse of Punta Filetto, which today is automatic but that until 1969 housed several families and a school for twelve children: the most northerly school in Sardinia. The only accommodation on Santa Maria is provided by the exclusive La Casitta hotel and restaurant, located on the southern side of the island, surrounded by lush vegetation.
